About
DFFE Saige
As the South African government’s lead authority, the DFFE leads South Africa’s transition to a low-carbon economy by balancing ecological integrity with economic growth. Through the Climate Change Act and digital systems like SAIGE, the Department manages national carbon budgets and GHG reporting to ensure compliance with international emissions targets and a sustainable future.
Challenge
Following the discontinuation of the legacy system (SAGERS), the DFFE required a ground-up rebuild of the SAIGE platform to manage South Africa’s greenhouse gas inventory.
The challenge involved navigating extreme data density and complex calculation logic while facilitating high-stakes collaboration between internal government departments and external industry stakeholders.
With stringent and complex regulatory requirements in place, the goal was to transform a defunct process into a streamlined digital workflow.
We focused on establishing a clear information architecture that prioritised data integrity and user accuracy, ensuring that the interface facilitates a workflow that could handle multi-sectoral inputs without compromising usability or the precision required by global climate protocols.
Opportunities
Legacy System Migration: From defunct workflows into high-performance digital standards.
Intuitive Logic Mapping: Adapting complex calculations into streamlined user inputs.
User-Centric Change Management: Reduced institutional friction by prioritising familiar mental models.
Standardised Global Compliance: Aligning the reporting architecture with international climate protocols.
Unified Data Governance: Establishing a single, verified source of truth for emissions data.
Strategic Stakeholder Synergy: Facilitating collaboration between government and external industry.
High-Stakes Data Validation: Safeguarding accuracy within dense, technical reporting sets.
Future-Proof Scalability: A modular framework that accommodates evolving national mandates.
Set of Deliverables
Final Outcomes
Unified Data Governance: Established a secure, national repository for critical environmental assets.
Operational Scalability: A modular framework to manage multi-sectoral data at scale.
Regulatory Efficiency: Streamlined the submission path to meet rigorous global climate protocols.
Institutional Continuity: Embedded complex workflows to preserve system knowledge.
Refined User Heuristics: Simplified extreme data density for a diverse, technical stakeholder base.
